With the coming of Industry 4.0, new innovations are required in all industries, which support the achievement of the best results with the help of a higher degree of automation of production lines, if possible, without the participation of human presence. The continuing research activities of the VÚHŽ Automation Division can support the efforts of metallurgical plants. Electromechanical servo drives controlled by up-to-date inverters have been already applied in several major steelworks, such as POSCO Korea, where they are, based on the achieved results, further extended to other continuous casting machines. Precise knowledge of the composition and especially the thickness of the ferromagnetic coating of the mould copper plates and tubes using the ferromagnetic detector and the VUHZ layer thickness meter can increase the use of these important parts influencing the quality of the continuous casting products. Another support is the sensor developed for thin slab continuous casting machine, with the help of which are higher casting speeds achieved while preserving or even improving the quality of the continuous casting products. Further improvement of parameters of the products is achieved by special applications as tailor-made solution.
Steel is by far the world's most important, multi-functional, and most adaptable materials. The excellent mechanical properties of advanced steels are determined by their microstructure. Thus, correct microstructural classification is crucial for understanding of the structure-properties relationship and further development. While the microstructural characterization is widely spread and well known, the microstructural classification is done manually by human experts, which results in uncertainties due to subjectivity. The microstructure of advanced steels, such as advanced high strength steels, is a combination of different phases or constituents with complex substructures and its automatic classification is extremely challenging. Recently, the lack of correct and objective microstructural classification methods with high classification accuracy is a barrier for the further development of a new generation of advanced steels. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop novel objective microstructural classification methods for multiphase steels. This goal leads us to utilize state-of-the-art Deep Learning methods due to their strong ability to learn high-level features from raw input data.

V tomto príspevku je porovnanie štandardnej dopadovej dosky so sférickou dopadovou doskou „Spheric“ pomocou nástrojov výpočtovej dynamiky tekutín (CFD) a fyzikálneho modelovania. Hodnotiacimi kritériami sú retenčný čas a prúdenie v medzipanve pri troch rôznych rýchlostiach odlievania.
Determination of real boundary cooling conditions is a fundamental requirement for numerical models and simulations to optimize and control selected processes in metallurgy. To obtain these boundary conditions, a special method has been developed. The input temperature history of cooling is obtained from experiments. The measured data are then mathematically evaluated. Realistic boundary conditions, as the heat transfer coefficient between hot surface and the coolant, allow next ptimization of the cooling sections and the design of their configurations. To realize the cooling test, unique laboratory equipment was developed. It allows setting of cooling conditions close to the plant conditions.
The paper presents examples of optimization of working roll cooling, examples of design of sections for in-line heat treatment of metals and procedure for designing a new high-pressure descaling sections. The methodology proposed by the Laboratory of Heat Transfer and Flow of the Brno University of Technology is typically used to determine the heat transfer coefficient on the surface of high-temperature material in the applications of heat treatment, cooling of rolls of hot rolling mills and high-pressure descaling. The methodology makes it possible to identify the effect of nozzle water
jets on the heat transfer coefficient or on removal of high-temperature scale and leads to optimization of cooling and descaling for industrial partners.
Fuel consumption in a continuous industrial furnace heated by mixed gas was monitored for 21 months. During this time, the amount of production fluctuated and at the same time there was a change in the composition of the fuel. The effect of both parameters on fuel consumption was analyzed separately. Both absolute and specific fuel consumption depending on the amount of production were approximated by a regression function. As the amount of production grows, the absolute fuel consumption increases, the specific consumption decreases. The obtained dependences correspond to theoretical courses in the form of power functions. The change in fuel composition due to the decrease in coke oven gas content and the increase in natural and blast furnace gas content caused an increase in absolute and specific gas consumption. The reason for the increase in fuel consumption was a decrease in combustion temperature and a related decrease in the use of chemically bound fuel heat.

In the hot metal and steel production the thermal equipment used for their production is essential with respect to the associated costs. The lining of torpedoes, blast oxygen furnaces, hot metal and steel ladles must withstand challenging manufacturing conditions. The working lining, that gets in contact with hot metal, wears out since it is affected by molten metal. The permanent lining on the other hand fulfills the safety and insulation function. The permanent lining is supposed to collect molten metal if the working lining is worn out and keep the metal temperature on the level of processing. When emptying a ladle, the lining protective layer (scab) is created if the temperature on the working lining surface is lower than the metal melting temperature. When designing the lining composition, the emphasis is given to material properties, as well as to its life time at the lowest costs per ton of steel. The paper evaluates permanent linings of metallurgical aggregates based on their thermal shock resistance and level of penetration into the brick volume.
Stainless hardenable steels are structural steels with increased strength properties for products and structures that can be used in corrosion-intensive environments. Their increased strength properties are obtained by precipitation processes, replacing mainly carbon and medium alloy steel products. An example of their advantageous properties is the production of springs with extremely high plasticity while maintaining high strength limits, even if it is a martensitic structure.
The paper presents an experimental procedure for casting ingots from model material into a special mold made for these tests. The sample material was stearin, which is suitable for this type of laboratory test. During the solidification process of the ingot model under laboratory conditions, it was visible how a solid layer gradually formed along the contour of the casting. Gradual cooling of the ingot resulted in a reduction in the volume of the liquid phase in its body. Shrinkage can be easily observed with the naked eye. The phenomenon is manifested by the formation of a gap between the mold wall and the ingot body. Silicone oil was used for the layer separating the melt from the mold wall. In the process of filling the cavity, an effort was made to create conditions for linear melt flow. An important task was to sense the temperature during filling of the mold cavity and its change during the solidification process. Theoretical knowledge of the issue is supplemented by experimental findings.
